Throughout the last year, Hailey Okula, known as \u201cNurse Hailey\u201d on Instagram, kept fans posted on her\u00a0infertility journey<\/a>\u00a0and excitement while getting ready to welcome her first child with her husband, firefighter Matthew Okula. But, instead of sharing happy news when their son was born last week, Matthew posted a shocking\u00a0message<\/a> on his 33-year-old wife\u2019s Instagram page: Hailey died due to complications from childbirth.<\/p>\n

\u201cHailey was more than I could have ever dreamed of in a wife and partner,\u201d Matthew wrote. \u201cShe was gorgeous, smart, hardworking, passionate, trustworthy, and above all else, unbelievably loyal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWords can\u2019t describe how badly we wanted to be parents,\u201d he continued. \u201cAfter years of infertility struggles and a long, challenging IVF process, we were overjoyed to be expecting Crew.\u201d Matthew also remembered a sweet moment that the couple went through, where he apologized for the\u00a0toll IVF would take<\/a>\u00a0on Hailey and she responded with, \u201cWe are a team, and we\u2019ll get through this together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was Hailey. A fighter. A teammate. A woman who would do anything for the people she loved,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Matthew later told\u00a0Fox News 11<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that his wife suffered cardiac arrest from amniotic fluid embolism just minutes after giving birth to the couple\u2019s son, Crew, via C-section. \u201cShe was able to see him for a split second, and I’m always going to remember that,\u201d Matthew said.<\/p>\n

Matthew has since shared two Instagram Story posts from the\u00a0Amniotic Fluid Embolism Foundation<\/a>, raising a lot of questions about what this childbirth complication is and any potential warning signs expectant parents need to be aware of. Here\u2019s what ob-gyns want you to know.<\/p>\n

Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare and life-threatening complication that can happen during delivery or soon after giving birth, according to the\u00a0Cleveland Clinic<\/a>. The condition happens when amniotic fluid, the liquid that surrounds the fetus during pregnancy, enters the mother\u2019s bloodstream right before, during, or after childbirth. In some people, this can spark a severe\u2014and potentially deadly\u2014allergic reaction.<\/p>\n

This allergic response usually causes a\u00a0heart attack<\/a>, although it can also lead to lung failure and severe bleeding. \u201cThis is an obstetrical emergency,\u201d\u00a0Christine Greves<\/a>, MD, an ob-gyn at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando, tells SELF. \u201cIt\u2019s terrifying because a lot can happen in a very short period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Again, this condition is very rare. A 2022\u00a0JAMA<\/em>\u00a0analysis<\/a>\u00a0of data from 14.6 million people who had a baby between 2016 and 2019 found that amniotic fluid embolism happened in six out of 100,000 deliveries. But the researchers determined that the mortality rate of amniotic fluid embolism was as high as 46% in some cases, particularly when there was a co-occurring health issue or problem with the placenta.<\/p>\n

There are a handful of amniotic fluid embolism risk factors to keep in mind.<\/h2>\n

Dr. Greves says that amniotic fluid embolism is an unpredictable childbirth complication. \u201cWe don\u2019t know who will have it and when,\u201d she says. However,\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0has found there are some factors that may raise your already low risk of experiencing it, including:<\/p>\n
