Cranberry can be helpful in preventing UTI’s by making the urine more acidic and preventing harmful bacterial from sticking to the walls of the bladder. Cranberries contain antioxidants and high levels of proanthocyanidins (PACs) which create an acidic environment in the urine making the destructive bacterial build up more difficult, reducing the chance of getting a UIT. Some medical studies have conflicting evidence to show cranberries are a reliable source of UTI prevention.
Sources of cranberry include juice, sauce, powder, tablets, and capsules. Cranberries can be dried, frozen or canned and, naturally, included in your diet. The best way to consume cranberries that may prevent UTI’s is through concentrated powders, tablets, and capsules.
Cranberries, and their helpful properties, are a complimentary means of prevention, not treatment for a UTI.
